How it is calculated

Clock-out time = clock-in time + paid shift length + unpaid break. Hours worked = (clock-out − clock-in) − unpaid break. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time the shift crossed midnight and 24 hours are added first. Minutes are converted to decimal hours by dividing by 60.

What time do I clock out for an 8-hour shift?

Add 8 hours plus your unpaid break to your start time. Starting at 9:00 AM with a 30-minute lunch, you clock out at 5:30 PM; with a one-hour lunch it is 6:00 PM.

Is a lunch break included in an 8-hour shift?

Usually not. Most US employers treat a 30–60 minute meal break as unpaid, so an 8-hour shift means 8 paid hours plus the break. Paid rest breaks of 10–15 minutes are already inside the 8 hours and should not be entered.

How do I count a shift that crosses midnight?

Enter the times normally. When the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator adds 24 hours, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 5 h 40 m is 5.67. The result line shows both formats.

Does this round to the nearest quarter hour?

No, it shows exact minutes. Some payroll systems round punches to 5, 6 or 15 minutes; the time card calculator has a rounding option for that.
