Daily overtime (California 8-hour and 12-hour rules) needs hours per day: use the time card calculator.
Enter the hours you worked this week and your hourly rate. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at one and a half times the regular rate. Change the threshold or the multiplier if your contract or state differs. For daily overtime (California’s 8-hour and 12-hour rules) use the time card calculator, which needs the hours per day.
Worked examples
- 46 hours at $20
- 40 regular hours × $20 = $800, plus 6 overtime hours × $30 = $180. Gross pay $980.00.
- 38 hours at $18.50
- No overtime; 38 × $18.50 = $703.00.
- Double time after 40
- Set the multiplier to 2: 45 hours at $25 = $1,000 regular + 5 × $50 = $1,250.00.
How it is calculated
Regular hours = the smaller of hours worked and the threshold (40 by default). Overtime hours = hours worked − threshold, never below zero. Pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier (1.5 by default). Minutes are converted to decimal hours first.
Questions people ask
- How is overtime calculated?
- Under federal law, every hour over 40 in a single workweek is paid at 1.5 times your regular rate. 46 hours at $20 means 40 × $20 plus 6 × $30 = $980.
- Is overtime after 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week?
- Federal law uses 40 hours per week. A few states add daily rules: California pays overtime after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12; Alaska, Nevada and Colorado also have daily thresholds. The time card calculator applies the California rules.
- What is time and a half for $15 an hour?
- $22.50 per overtime hour. Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5.
- Are salaried employees entitled to overtime?
- Some are. Salaried workers below the federal salary threshold, or whose duties are not exempt, are still owed overtime. This calculator assumes an hourly, non-exempt worker.
- Does paid time off count toward the 40 hours?
- Not under federal law. Only hours actually worked count toward overtime, so a week with 8 hours of PTO and 36 worked has no overtime.
- Can I use this for biweekly pay?
- Overtime is measured per workweek, not per pay period. Calculate each week separately, or use the time card calculator’s biweekly mode, which does this automatically.
