The 0900 hour, every quarter
What 0900 means on a shift
The 9-to-5 day is 0900 to 1700: 8 hours on the clock, with lunch either inside those hours or extending the day to 1730. Business hours of 9 to 5 are written 0900 to 1700 on any 24-hour sign or schedule. Meetings pencilled for 0900 are the standard start-of-day slot in most offices.
The mistake people make with 0900
0900 is rarely misread as evening, but it is the last leading-zero hour, and people converting a list sometimes drop the zero from 0900 and keep it elsewhere, which looks inconsistent and can be misread as a four-digit number with a missing digit. Write every hour as four digits. The evening nine is 2100.
0900 is 9:00 AM, spoken oh nine hundred hours. It is the nine in nine-to-five and the hour most shops, banks and offices open. It is also the last hour that carries a leading zero; from 1000 the numbers look like ordinary times again.
