The 1100 hour, every quarter
What 1100 means on a shift
Late morning. The early shifts that started at 0500 or 0600 are into their second half; the office day is approaching lunch. Many schools break for lunch around 1100 or 1130, and restaurants open for the lunch trade. If you work 0700 to 1500, 1100 is the halfway point.
The mistake people make with 1100
The transition from 1159 to 1200 is clean in military time and confusing in 12-hour time. 11:59 AM becomes 12:00 PM, and the letters flip at exactly the moment the number stops looking like an AM hour. In 24-hour form there is no flip: 1159 is followed by 1200. The other confusion is 11 PM, which is 2300, twelve hours later.
1100 is 11:00 AM, spoken eleven hundred hours. It is the last full hour of the morning. At 1159 the clock reads one minute to noon, and the next minute is 1200: the day does not reset, it simply continues counting.
