The 1300 hour, every quarter
What 1300 means on a shift
1300 is when most lunch breaks end and the afternoon starts. On a 0700 to 1500 shift it is the last two hours; on an 0800 to 1700 day it is the first hour back after lunch. Schedules, appointments and delivery windows written as 1300 to 1500 mean 1 to 3 in the afternoon.
The mistake people make with 1300
The arithmetic trips people in both directions. Converting 1300 to 12-hour time, some subtract 10 instead of 12 and get 3 PM. Converting 1 PM to military time, some write 0100, forgetting that AM hours keep their number and PM hours add twelve. 1300 is 1 PM; 0100 is 1 AM. They are twelve hours apart.
1300 is 1:00 PM, spoken thirteen hundred hours. It is the first afternoon hour and the first one where converting needs arithmetic: 13 minus 12 is 1, and it is PM. From here until 2300, every hour works the same way.
Worked examples
- 1300 to standard
- 13 minus 12 is 1, and it is afternoon: 1:00 PM.
- 1:00 PM to military
- 1 plus 12 is 13: 1300, thirteen hundred hours.
- 1:45 PM to military
- 1345, said thirteen forty-five. Only the hour changes; the minutes carry across.
How it is calculated
For 1300 through 2359, subtract 12 from the hour to get the 12-hour time, and it is PM: 13 becomes 1 PM. Going the other way, add 12 to any PM hour from 1 to 11: 1 PM becomes 13.
