The 0100 hour, every quarter
What 0100 means on a shift
For most people 0100 is the middle of the night. For night shifts it is the middle of the working day: a 2300 to 0700 rotation is two hours in at 0100. Bars in many US cities call last orders around now, and taxi and delivery drivers are still on the clock. If you clocked in before midnight and are still working at 0100, your timesheet is already on the next date.
The mistake people make with 0100
1 AM and 1 PM are twelve hours apart but look alike in the 12-hour system. In military time they cannot be confused: 1 AM is 0100 and 1 PM is 1300. The mistake runs the other way: someone sees 0100 on a schedule and reads it as 1 PM because the one is what they notice. The leading zero is the tell. Any time that starts with 0 is morning, before noon.
0100 is 1:00 AM, the first full hour after midnight. The leading zero is not decorative: it keeps every time at four digits so that 0100 cannot be misread as 100 or confused with 1000. It is spoken as oh one hundred hours.
Worked examples
- 1:00 AM to military
- 0100. AM hours keep their number, padded to two digits: 01. Said oh one hundred hours.
- 1:20 AM to military
- 0120, said oh one twenty. The minutes carry across unchanged.
- 0100 to standard
- 1:00 AM. Hours 01 through 11 are AM and keep their number; just add the AM.
How it is calculated
1 AM is already an hour of the 24-hour clock, so it only needs a leading zero: 1:xx AM becomes 01xx. Back again, 01xx is 1:xx AM. No adding or subtracting twelve for any AM hour from 1 to 11.
Questions people ask
- Is 0100 1 AM or 1 PM?
- 1 AM. The leading zero means the hour is before noon. 1 PM is 1300.
- How do you say 0100 in military time?
- Oh one hundred hours, or zero one hundred. Either is understood; oh one hundred is more common in American usage.
- What is 0115 in regular time?
- 1:15 AM. The hour is 01 and the minutes stay 15.
- Why does 0100 have a zero in front?
- So every military time is four digits. 100 on its own could be a count or a typo. 0100 can only be a time.
