The 0200 hour, every quarter
What 0200 means on a shift
In the US, clocks spring forward at 0200 in March, jumping straight to 0300, and fall back at 0200 in November, repeating 0100 to 0200. If you work a night shift on either of those nights, your card will show a 7-hour or 9-hour shift for the same scheduled hours. Payroll normally pays what was actually worked. Outside those two nights, 0200 is simply the third hour of a graveyard shift and the hour most bars have closed by.
The mistake people make with 0200
On the November change night, 0200 happens twice on the same date. A timesheet reading 0130 to 0230 could mean one hour or two. Most time clocks record the UTC offset to resolve it; a handwritten card cannot. Note which 0200 you mean, or write the shift against the clock before and after the change. Beyond daylight saving, 0200 has the usual leading-zero rule: it is 2 AM, not 2 PM, which is 1400.
0200 is 2:00 AM, spoken oh two hundred hours. It is a quiet hour for most people and a notable one for anyone running a 24-hour schedule, because it is the hour the United States uses to switch daylight saving time on and off.
Worked examples
- 2:00 AM to military
- 0200, oh two hundred hours. Keep the 2, pad it to 02.
- 2:45 AM to military
- 0245, said oh two forty-five.
- A night shift on the spring-forward night
- Scheduled 2300 to 0700. Clocks jump from 0200 to 0300, so only 7 hours pass on the clock. Most employers pay the 7 actually worked; check your policy.
How it is calculated
2 AM is already an hour of the 24-hour clock: 2:xx AM becomes 02xx. Back again, 02xx is 2:xx AM. No twelve to add or subtract for AM hours.
Questions people ask
- What time is 0200 in regular time?
- 2:00 AM. The leading zero marks it as before noon.
- Why is daylight saving time changed at 0200?
- It was chosen as the hour least likely to disrupt anything: after most late-night activity and before early trains and shifts. The change happens at 0200 local time in each US time zone in turn.
- How do I log a shift on the night the clocks change?
- Record real clock-in and clock-out times and note the change. On the spring night, a 2300 to 0700 shift is 7 hours; on the fall night it is 9. Most employers pay hours actually worked, so the card should show them.
- What is 0230 in standard time?
- 2:30 AM. Hour 02 is 2 AM; the minutes stay as they are.
- Is 0200 the same as 2 PM?
- No. 2 PM is 1400. Any time starting with 0 is in the morning.
