The 0600 hour, every quarter
What 0600 means on a shift
First shift in hospitals, warehouses and manufacturing is very often 0600 to 1430 or 0600 to 1400. School bus drivers, road crews and anyone opening a site for a 0700 start are on by now. On a card, 0600 pairs naturally with 1400 for an 8-hour day or 1430 with a half-hour unpaid break. It is also when many night shifts begin to hand over.
The mistake people make with 0600
0600 and 1800 are the hours most often swapped by people new to military time, because 6 AM and 6 PM are both so common: one starts the working day and one ends it. The two differ by exactly twelve: 6 AM is 0600, 6 PM is 6 plus 12, which is 1800. If you see a 6 with a leading zero, it is morning.
0600 is 6:00 AM, spoken oh six hundred hours. It is the hour most associated with the military day: reveille sounds at or near 0600 on many bases, and a lot of civilian first shifts begin here too.
