The 0500 hour, every quarter
What 0500 means on a shift
Oh dark thirty, the joke for an unreasonably early hour, comes from times like 0530 being read aloud: the zero is said as oh, and it is still dark. A 0500 to 1330 shift is the standard early turn in a lot of manufacturing. Transit systems run their first services around now, and anyone working a 0500 start is usually finished by mid-afternoon.
The mistake people make with 0500
5 AM and 5 PM are both big shift markers: one starts the early turn, the other ends the office day. In military time 5 AM is 0500 and 5 PM is 1700. The error people make is reading 0500 as five o'clock and then assuming the familiar evening one. The leading zero says morning every time.
0500 is 5:00 AM, spoken oh five hundred hours. It is the classic early start: physical training in the services, first shift in many factories and warehouses, and the hour many people set an alarm for a long commute.
