The 0300 hour, every quarter
What 0300 means on a shift
0300 is the lowest point of the body clock for most people, which is why night-shift guidance about alertness, breaks and driving home focuses on it. On a 2300 to 0700 rotation it is the halfway mark. Hospitals, data centres, long-haul trucking and overnight security all have a 0300 on every card. It is also the hour of many scheduled maintenance windows, because systems are at their quietest.
The mistake people make with 0300
Written without its zero, 300 looks like a count and 3:00 could be either side of noon. In military time there is no ambiguity: 0300 is 3 AM and 1500 is 3 PM. The practical mistake is on a handwritten card where someone writes 300 meaning 3 AM and a reader assumes afternoon. Keep the zero.
0300 is 3:00 AM. It is spoken oh three hundred hours. On a 24-hour clock it sits almost exactly opposite 1500, which is the afternoon hour people sometimes confuse it with when the leading zero is dropped.
Worked examples
- 3:00 AM to military
- 0300, said oh three hundred hours.
- 3:10 AM to military
- 0310, said oh three ten.
- Halfway through a night shift
- A shift from 2300 to 0700 reaches 0300 after 4 hours, with 4 to go. Break timing is often set around this point for that reason.
How it is calculated
3 AM only needs the leading zero: 3:xx AM becomes 03xx. In reverse, 03xx is 3:xx AM. The afternoon counterpart, 3 PM, is 1500, which is 3 plus 12.
