What 0400 means on a shift

A 0400 start is common in food production, in airport ground operations before the first departures, and in construction crews that beat the heat in summer. Written on a timesheet, 0400 to 1230 is an 8.5-hour day with a 30-minute lunch deducted. People who start at 0400 usually describe it as 4 in the morning, but on a card the four-digit form avoids any doubt about which 4 o'clock is meant.

The mistake people make with 0400

4 AM and 4 PM are both common shift boundaries: 4 AM starts an early day, 4 PM ends a standard one. On a 12-hour card they differ by two letters that are easy to drop or misread. In military time they are 0400 and 1600, and the first digit settles it. If you are converting from a 12-hour entry and the AM/PM is missing, the job itself is usually the clue: a bakery start is 0400, an office end is 1600.

0400 is 4:00 AM, spoken oh four hundred hours. It is the hour the earliest workers start: bakeries, farms, fish markets, newspaper and parcel depots, and the first wave of commuters on long drives. On a night shift it is the last stretch before handover.

4 AM becomes 04xx: pad the hour, keep the minutes. 04xx converts back to 4:xx AM. The afternoon 4 o'clock is 1600.
