12 noon, 12 PM1200Noon keeps the twelve. 12:30 PM is 1230.12 midnight, 12 AM0000Midnight drops to zero. 12:30 AM is 0030. Some write 2400.

Hours between two military times

End minus start, plus 24 hours when the shift crosses midnight. Each row opens the hours calculator with both times filled in, where you can subtract a break and get decimal hours.

Every hour, explained

Each hour has its own page: how to say it, the quarter-hours, what it means on a shift and the mistake people make converting it. For the letter after a time, see the military time zones, Alpha to Zulu.

Army time, military time, 24-hour time

They are one clock with three names. Army time is what most people call it; military time is the formal name; 24-hour time is the same count written with a colon, 17:30 rather than 1730. Hospitals, airlines, emergency services and most of the world outside the United States use the 24-hour form every day. What makes it military is only the way it is written and said: four digits, no colon, read as hundreds. Seventeen thirty, not five thirty PM. The arithmetic never changes: add twelve to PM hours from one to eleven, and the morning hours only gain a leading zero.

Military time, also called army time or 24-hour time, counts the day from 0000 at midnight to 2359. Type a standard 12-hour time to see its military equivalent, or a military time to see it in AM/PM. Below: the current time in both forms, the two hours that catch everyone (noon and midnight), the hours between two military times for common shifts, the full chart, and a page for each of the 24 hours.

Worked examples

Afternoon
5:30 PM becomes 1730, said seventeen thirty. Add 12 to any PM hour except 12 PM.
Midnight and noon
12:00 AM is 0000 (zero hundred) and 12:00 PM is 1200. 12:15 AM is 0015; 12:15 PM is 1215. Twelve is the one hour that does not add twelve.
Morning
7:05 AM becomes 0705, said oh seven oh five. Morning hours keep their number with a leading zero.
Hours between two military times
0700 to 1530 is 8 hours 30 minutes. The hours calculator reads military time directly: type 0700 and 1530, subtract the break, and it returns hh:mm and decimal hours.

How it is calculated

For PM times from 1:00 to 11:59, add 12 to the hour; 12 PM stays 12; 12 AM becomes 00. Write the hour with two digits and drop the colon. To convert back, subtract 12 from hours 13 to 23 and add PM; 00 becomes 12 AM. Hours between two military times = end minus start, plus 24 hours when the end is earlier than the start.

Questions people ask

Is army time the same as military time?
Yes. Army time, military time and 24-hour time all mean the same clock: 0000 to 2359, four digits, no colon, read aloud as hundreds. Army time is simply the everyday name for it.
What is 12 noon in military time?
1200. Noon is 12:00 PM and it keeps the twelve. Only midnight changes: 12:00 AM is 0000. The 1200 page covers every minute of the noon hour.
What is 12 midnight in military time?
0000, zero hundred hours, at the start of a day. Some schedules write 2400 for midnight at the end of the previous day; it is the same instant. 12:30 AM is 0030. The 0000 page has the full hour.
How do I calculate hours between two military times?
Subtract the start from the end. 0700 to 1530 is 8 hours 30 minutes. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight, so add 24 hours: 2300 to 0700 is 8 hours. The hours calculator accepts military time directly and subtracts breaks.
What is 1730 in regular time?
5:30 PM. Subtract 12 from 17 to get 5, and hours 12 to 23 are PM.
What is 1500 in military time?
1500 is 3:00 PM. Military time already is the 24-hour format; 3 PM plus 12 is 15.
How do you say 0000 in military time?
Zero hundred hours, or zero zero zero zero. It is midnight, the start of the day. Some services write 2400 for midnight at the end of the day.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
Almost. Both count 0 to 23 hours. Military time drops the colon (1730 instead of 17:30) and is read aloud as seventeen thirty hours.
What time is it right now in military time?
The clock at the top of this page shows your device's current time in military and standard form, updating every second.
How do I convert military time to decimal hours for a timesheet?
Convert the two times, then use the hours calculator: it accepts 0730 or 07:30 directly and returns decimal hours.
